Activating Groups are those which donate the electrons to a given molecule.
Example- All Alkyl Groups are electron donating , Molecules having excess pair of electrons like NH3 etc

Deactivating Groups are those which take away the electron from a given molecule.
Example- NO2 , Cyanide etc
