Two buses leave Columbus, Ohio at the same time and travel in opposite directions. One bus averages 55 mi/h and the other bus averages 48 mi/h. When will they be 618 mi apart?

Using distance = speed x time we have:

55t + 48t = 618

so, 103t = 618

i.e. #t = 618/103 => 6#

Hence, after 6 hours they are 618 miles apart

Checking, we have 6 x 55 => 330 and 6 x 48 => 288

i.e. 330 + 288 = 618 miles
