Metals are (i) malleable, capable of being hammered into a sheet; and (ii) ductile, capable of being drawn into a wire........

These properties are attributed to metallic bonding, in which every metal atom contributes 1 or more valence electrons to the metallic lattice, to give an extended structure held together by STRONG electrostatic forces; #"positive ions in a sea of electrons"# is the common description. The electrons, which are mobile, and can move over the entire lattice (and hence thus give rise to thermal and electrical conductivities) are the glue that holds the metallic lattice together.
