Thus, the displacement of the squirrel on the x axis with respect to origin is positive as its x coordinate is increasing overtime.Hence its velocity is taken positive.

But the dog on the other hand is moving towards the origin, in the reverse direction of the squirrel.As its x coordinate is decreasing overtime, its displacement is negative.Therefore, its velocity is taken as negative
