15 km = 150000 dm

Explanation:

The metric system has prefixes that identify how much, by factors of 10, the measurement is above or below the base measurement.

The most common prefixes are:
- Kilo, meaning 1000
- Hecto, meaning 100
- Deca, meaning 10
- deci, meaning 1/10
- centi, meaning 1/100
- mili, meaning 1/1000

The basic units of the system are liter for volume, gram for weight and meter for distance.

Now for our problem. We have 15 kilo-meters so 15 x 1000 meters or 15000 meters. This is still not in the units we want. Remember that each time you go to a unit below you multiply by 10 (1 meter = 10 decimeters), so our 15000 meters become 150000 decimeters.

#15Km =15,000dm#

Explanation:

The units in the metric system work with powers of #10#.
This makes conversions really easy, far more so than the imperial system with its inches, yards and miles.

For distance we have:

#" "Km" "Hm" "Dm" "m" "dm" "cm" "mm#

#1Km = 10Hm =100Dm= 1000m" "and#

#1000m= 10 000dm = 100000cm = 1000000mm#

#1m = 10dm =100cm =1000mm#

or:

#10mm = 1cm" "10cm = 1dm" "10dm = 1m# and so on..

#Km xx 10 rarr Hm xx 10 rarr Dm xx 10 rarr m xx 10 rarr dm#

#15Km xx10xx10xx10xx10 = 150,000dm#
