A late answer, but I think you mean an #"homologous series"#.........a series of (typically) organic compounds with the same general formula. And one such series is the #"alkanes"#, which has general formula #C_nH_(2n+2)#, #(n=1,2,3,....)#

And another such series is the #"alkenes"#, which has general formula #C_nH_(2n)#, #(n=1,2,3,....)#.

Such classifications are useful in organic chemistry, because we can define the reaction chemistry of a broad class of organic species, whose formulae conform to the given formula.
