We always want to follow the PEMDAS method.

Because there are no parentheses or exponents, we can skip the first two steps.

The next steps, Multiplication and Division, can be used.

#1/1# is a form of division, and can be simplified to become #1#.

We now have #1##/4 +1#

#1##/4# is another form of division, and can always look like #1/4#.

Now we have #1/4 +1#, where we just add the two together.

There are different ways to give your answer, whether you want a mixed number, improper fraction, or decimal form.

  1. Mixed number:
    #1 1/4#
  2. Improper fraction:
    #1# becomes #4/4#, and when added together becomes #5/4#.
  3. Decimal form:
    #1/4# is just #.25#, and becomes #1.25#.
