Selling of Land

Explanation:

I'm not sure if you mean pre-colonial era or post-colonial era, but here is one possible answer. The purchase of the Louisiana territory led to major exploration and expansion into the west.

Three factors led to Napoleon selling the Louisiana Territory:

  • Napoleon needed money to fund his war with Britain.
  • The rebellion of Haiti crushed his hope for an American empire, and influenced him selling the territory.
  • He planned on restarting hostilities with Britain, and feared that Britain could seize the Louisiana Territory by force with their superior navy.

So when US diplomats came to France to buy the port of New Orleans and some land in Florida, for 10 million, Napoleon offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory, about 820,000 square miles, for just 15 million. This about doubled the size of the US. Much of the Louisiana territory was unexplored.
