Mitosis produces 2 identical diploid (2n) cells from a single mother cell. During asexual reproduction mostly identical copies are produced.
Meiosis produces 4 haploid (1n) cells each containing half of the genetic material that the original mother cell had. The processes of meiosis is used to create gametes which are also known as sex cells. During sexual reproduction haploid (1n) gametes combine to create a diploid (2n) organism that has a combination of genetic material from both parents.
