I do not know of any analytic approach to a problem of this type.
So "trial and error" it is!

Try #(4+2)^3 = 216#
This will be too great to get to 14

#:. 2^3 =8 -> 4+8-5xx2#

Notice: #4+8-5 = 7#

Then: #7xx2 =14#

Hence, the parentheses should be applied as follows:

#(4+2^3-5)xx2=14#
