If you're talking about electrons orbiting an atom, then yes, they're hypothetical. The laws of physics won't allow us to know two things at the same time, position and speed. So most scientists and the accepted model is an electron cloud, where the electrons of an atom could be at any given point. We can figure out how fast they're going, or where they are at a given time, but we cannot know both.
