glycolysis is the first stem of energy metabolism and splits a molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate - 2 molecules of ATP and 2 molecules NADH are net produced in the process.

Explanation:

The glycolytic pathway occurs in the cell cytoplasm and is a two part process:
1) a molecule of glucose is split into two highly energetic 3-carbon intermediate compounds
---> costs 2 ATP
2) the intermediate compunds have energy and electrons extracted in a series of small steps, producing two molecules of pyruvic acid
----> gain 4 ATP & 2 NADH
