The scientific method.

Explanation:

First ask the question
This is based on A. observations that lead to an idea of what is causing the pattern of observations.
This is based on B. a theory of why things work the way they work.

Second make a prediction, or Hypothesis.
The pattern of the observations leads to a prediction of what should be observed next. If further observation confirm the pattern the ideas may lead to a theory.
The theory explains why what happens happens. The explanation leads to predictions of what will happen in other circumstances.

Third set up a an experiment that will test the predictions of the Hypothesis. A.Set up a method of making observations that will test the pattern proposed.
B.Set up an experiment with an independent variable that will influence another variable (the dependent variable), while all the other variables that might affect the experiment are controlled.

Fourth do the experiment carefully recording the observations and results of the experiment.

Fifth Analysis the results of the experiment and observations to see if the Hypothesis are confirmed.
