There are two important alkali metals in our body; sodium and potassium

Sodium is involved with osmosis where water molecules move from an area of high solute potential(a lot of ions, #Na^+#) to an area of low solute potential. It prevents crenation and and cytolysis from happening.

Potassium is involved in nerve signals; nerves have tiny amount of potassium in them to promote conductivity of electrical nerve pulses, thus improving the nervous system's function.
