When dealing with algebraic expressions or equations, you can usually double check my answer by substituting the answer you obtained back into the original expressions or equations.

Explanation:

Example if: #3x-12=2xto#

#3x-2x-12+12=2x-2x+12#

#3x-2xcancel(-12)+cancel(12)=cancel(2x)cancel(-2x)+12to#

#x=12# [ANS]

Then we can check the solution by substituting [ANS] into the given equation.

#3x-12=2xto#

#3(12)-12=2(12)#

#36-12=24#
