In alternating current, the electrons move back and forth in the circuit.

Explanation:

If you are looking at a wire carrying the alternating current, the electrons go right-left-right-left-right-etc. They move that way in response to a voltage that changes back and forth between positive-negative-positive-negative-positive-negative-etc.

So the electrons are pushed-pulled-pushed-pulled-pushed-pulled-etc. back and forth along the circuit. If you could watch a particular electron, it would probably never completely exit the circuit.

I hope this helps,
