What is the difference between deforestation and desertification?

Desertification is the result of deforestation, but these terms aren't synonymous.

Explanation:

Deforestation refers to the process of cutting trees on a massive scale. This leads to loosening of soil. This soil is easier to displace, so the fertile soil gets washed away by water or carried off by wind in subsequent years. The land now has only infertile soil, therefore plants cannot grow and the place turns barren and ultimately becomes a desert.

So, We can say that desertification follows deforestation if not followed by afforestation.
