simple answer: same way hydrocarbons move from source rocks to reservoir rocks
Explanation:
water is a liquid so it can easily move through small openings. In the subsurface, these openings are known as "pores". The bigger the pores and the higher the connectivity of the pores, higher rate will be of the movement of water. If there is a reservoir of water or an aquifer in the subsurface, if there is enough pore connectivity, the water will move upwards. This water will then join in the river or streams flowing on the surface.
