  • In the very initial stage of pregnancy source of progesterone remains corpus luteum .
  • As pregnancy advances a placenta is formed, and responsibility of secretion of progesterone shifts to placenta.

Progesterone helps in the continuation of pregnancy.

  • Progesterone acts as a sleeping pill for the uterine muscles, i.e. untimely contraction of uterine muscles is inhibited.

  • Progesterone also helps in maintenance of thickened endometrium lining and also in secretion of nutrients.
