- In the very initial stage of pregnancy source of progesterone remains corpus luteum .
- As pregnancy advances a placenta is formed, and responsibility of secretion of progesterone shifts to placenta.
Progesterone helps in the continuation of pregnancy.

Progesterone acts as a sleeping pill for the uterine muscles, i.e. untimely contraction of uterine muscles is inhibited.

Progesterone also helps in maintenance of thickened endometrium lining and also in secretion of nutrients.
