The invention is often credited to Galileo as he was perhaps the first to publicise his observations widely.
Explanation:
I’m not a science historian by any means, but I think there are suggestions that he copied an instrument invented in Holland, possibly through his connections with the Venetian glass craftsmen who knew how to make lenses better than almost anyone in Europe at the time.
This is not fact, but a half-remembered rumour (possibly wiser to keep quiet in that case.)
