Egyptian 2012 Elections

Explanation:

The Egyptian election happened after the ousting of the incumbent president Hosni Mubarak during the Arab Spring. The 2 main candidates were Mohammed Morsi, a former member of the Egyptian Parliament, of the Freedom and Justice Party v. Ahmed Shafik, who was the Prime Minister under Mubarak, ran as an Independent. The election was a close one, with Morsi having 51.7% of the vote and Shafik having 48.3% of the vote. Morsi was inaugurated as president on June 30th, 2012. Only to be ousted in a military coup a year later. After the coup, Egyptian General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took the presidency and arrested Morsi, who was on trial for various crimes and was to be sentenced to death. The death sentence was overturned and Morsi is still imprisoned. The reaction to this coup was mixed. Most Arab nations said they supported it or were neutral. One strong dissident was Tunisia who condemned the action. The U.S. didn't even recognize it as a coup. Many other countries were worried or concerned about it.
