The number of blue jays they saw were, #14#.

Given that : The ratio of robins to blue jays they see is 3:1.

That means if the number of blue jays seen were = #x#, then the number of robins seen were = #3 times x#

Also given that : they saw a total of 56 robins and blue jays,

that means #=> x+ 3x = 56#

#therefore 4x = 56#

#=> x = 56/4#

#=> x = 14# ------- were the number of blue jays they saw,

and

#3x= 3xx14 = 42# -------- were the number of robins they saw.
