Electromagnets are often used at recycling centres to separate some types of metals from other materials. Why is an electromagnet used rather than a permanent magnet?

Because the purpose is to collect it from one place and drop it somewhere else. So we need a way of switching off the magnetism when it is not required. With electromagnets magnetism vanishes the instant electric current is switched off.
