They acquire same charges and hence repel.

Explanation:

When the charges (be it negative or positive) travel through the rod on the leaves, both the leaves get equally charged.
As the leaves have like charges they repel, i.e. they diverge. Initially if they appear as shape of alphabet I, now they will look like V (inverted).
