Before we can do anything we want to change #-1/3# into a value that matches the denominator of the other fraction #-5/6#. We can write #-1/3# as #-2/6# because they both equal the same value but it is easier to now find what u equals.

Adding #5/6# to both sides gives us:

#-2/6 + 5/6 = u# (Because the denominator is the same we just add the numerators/ top numbers)

#(-2 + 5)/6 = u# which gives #3/6 = u#.

We can simplify #3/6# to #1/2# so:

#u = 1/2#
