My class has just finished reading this. For one, when Montresor shows Fortunado his shovel, this a sign he was going to box him up. Another was showing Fortunato his family motto about revenge. He is getting revenge on Fortunato for making fun of him. Foreshadowing is often used here too. When Montresor meets Fortunato at the fair and says he is "luckily met" when really he is about to die.
