The amount of water required is dependent upon the desired concentration.
Explanation:
For example if your 1 gallon (lets say 4.5l to keep it metic) copper chloride solution is 1 M (that is 1 moles of copper chloride present in 1 litre of solution) and you wanted a solution that is 0.1M, you would dilute by a factor of 10.
Take 1litre of your original solution (1M), add 9 litres of water (to give overall volume of 10litres) and you would end up with a 0.1M solution.
You can add as much or as little water as you want, and if you even add a tiny bit of water, you are still technically 'diluting' the solution, just not very much.
