Please see below.

Explanation:

.

Ratio is a factor of how many times a number is smaller or larger than another number. For example:

"Eample 1"

If you have $4000 in your account and your friend has $2000 in his/her account the ratio of your account balance to your friend's is:

#4000/2000=2# which says you have two times as much money in your account as your friend.

"Eample 2"

If you walk #1/3# of a mile to school from your house and your friend walks #2# miles from his/her house to school the ratio of the distance you walk to the distance your friend walks is:

#(1/3)/(2/1)=1/3*1/2=1/6# which means you walk #1/6# the distance your friend walks.

Further Explanation:
_________

#1:2:3# is the same idea. The difference is you are comparing three quantities with each other instead of two. You can do this with as many quantities as you want. For example:

If we changed the example #2# above and added a second friend of yours by saying that your second friend walks #1# mile to schools then we would have :

#(1/3)/(1/1)=1/3# which means you walk #1/3# the distance your second friend walks. You can show these ratios as:

#1/6# of the first friend, #1/3# of the second friend, #1# of your own

#1/6:1/3:1#

or if you wanted to get rid of the fractions you could multiply all of them by #6# and the ratios would become:

#1:2:6#
