The Coriolis effect is an apparent force that occurs because the Earth is rotating. Anything in motion on a rotating object is going to have it's path altered due to the rotation. I am sure you have walked on a rotating carousel. If you look at an object that is not on the carousel and take a step toward it you will not actually be moving toward it since the carousel's rotation has changed your direction.
