How do you do ppm (parts per million) calculations???

Please explain it in the simplest way possible and at a Grade 9 level.

I don't get how to do all the cross divide/multiplying in a problem.

Well, formally, #1*"ppm"-=1*mg*L^-1#...

Explanation:

Why? Because a #1*L# volume of water has a mass of #1000*g#....and in each gram, there are #1000*mg#....and so in the original volume of WATER, there are #1000xx1000*mg# #=# #1000000*mg#.

For dilute solutions, we often report the concentration of a solvent in such units of #"ppm"#...at these concentrations we rarely have to worry about the possibility of different densities...

Note that the prefix #"m"-="milli"-=10^-3# and #mu-="micro"-=10^-6# in the metric system.
