FIRST, you need anything that contains either zinc and/or chloride. Then you need to make sure that they will combined to give you a product of #ZnCl_2#.

The easiest one would be to just dissolve zinc metal in hydrochloric acid:
#Zn + 2HCl -> ZnCl_2 + H_2 (g)#

Zinc metal and chlorine gas....

Explanation:

And we can represent this by the redox reaction....

#Zn(s) + Cl_2(g) stackrel(Delta)rarrZnCl_2(s)#

The metal is oxidized, and chlorine gas is reduced.....

Of course you could oxidize the metal by the action of hydrochloric acid...

#Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) rarr ZnCl_2(aq) +H_2(g)uarr#

See below:

Explanation:

A safe and easy method is to choose a suitable base such as zinc oxide or zinc carbonate.

XS base is added to dilute hydrochloric acid. The mixture is filtered and the zinc chloride solution is crystallised.

#sf(ZnO_((s))+2HCl_((aq))rarrZnCl_(2(aq))+H_2O_((l))#

or

#sf(ZnCO_(3(s))+2HCl_((aq))rarrZnCl_(2(aq))+CO_(2(g))+H_2O_((l)))#
