Explanation:

Not all sperm cells die inside the woman's vagina even if she is on her period because the semen has alkaline properties that neutralizes the acidity of the vagina. Usually, women who get pregnant even if they were in their period are on the last few days of their menstrual cycle.

After menstruation is finished, the ovary will release another egg cell. The healthy sperm cells mentioned earlier will be lying in wait in the vagina and thus they will swim towards it and will result in fertilization.

This is why having sex during a period is not advisable in family planning. Proper use of condoms and consistent use of birth control pills are still the most recommended methods.
