#2x+4*3=72#
#x=30#

Explanation:

I am going to say that this is the equation. The sum means to add. It is asking you to add twice a number. You don't know what the number is, so you are going to do #2x# Then it says and 4. Remember you were suppose to add. So you will add #4# to #2x#. This is then tripled, so you would multiply it by #3#. The result is then #72#.

Multiply #4*3# which will equal #12#. Then subtract 12 from each side. #2x+12-12=72-12# This will leave you with #2x=60#. Then divide both sides by #2#. This will leave you with your answer of x=30

The phrase "twice a number" tells us to write:

#2x#

The phrase "the sum of twice a number and 4" tells us to add 4:

#2x+4#

Then it tells us that the whole thing is tripled:

#3(2x+4)#

The phrase "the result is 72" tell us that whole thing equals 72:

#3(2x+4)=72#

I hope that this helps.
