Pro mean before & karyon mean nucleus. So the word means before nucleus. Prokaryotes are the unicellular organism that don't contain true nucleus. They possess their genetic material in the cytoplasm of their cell. This genetic material is a single chromosome which aggregates in a dense region called nucleoid.

Prokaryotic cell lack all the membrane bounded organelles. However they have substitutes of them in order to carry out normal functioning.
