Following are the important characteristics which the birds have adapted in order to fly:

In birds the fore limbs are changed into wings . These Wings have very strong pectoral muscles. These muscles pull the wings up and down.

The Skeleton of bird is highly modified for flight. The most important adaptation here is the development of sternum to form Keel. This keel is used for the attachment of flight muscles.

I pectoral girdle, the tendon of Supra-coracoid muscles passes through an opening called foramen triosseum. It makes the lifting action possible. And provide power for upward stroke. This foramen is formed between the scapula coracoid and clavicle bones. The upper surface of the humerus is attached in this foramen triosseum.

Body of birds is covered with feathers . The feathers give the wing a lot surface area for flight. The feathers are also designed in a way that air can easily flow over them.

The number of bones is reduced in limbs of birds. Many bones are fused together to increase strength in order to fly.

Birds have streamlined bodies . This feature help them to cut through the air.
