The signals remain "trapped" within the fibres due to total internal reflection - each time the signal might transmit out of the fibre, the aspect of refraction known as total internal reflection causes it to reflect back into the fibre.

While the details are rather technical, it is due to the very high frequency of light (on the order of #10^(14)Hz#), it is possible for these fibres to carry an enormous number of calls simultaneously.
