In 1997 and 1998 three studies of the supernovas in distance space indicated that not only was the universe expanding but that the rate of the expansion was increasing.
The Supernova Cosmology Project , The High Z Cosmology Search Team, and the Super Nova Legacy Survey all discovered evidence from the study of Supernovas that the rate of the expansion of the Universe was increasing. For their discoveries these research teams shared a noble prize in science.
The prevailing theories of an alternating universe of big bangs and big crushes predicted that the rate of expansion of the universe should be slowly down. The Hypothesis of these studies was that the evidence would support the prediction of a decreasing rate of expansion. The evidence disproved the Hypothesis.
The Scientific community is still trying to come to an understanding of the implications of the discovery that the universe is increasing its rate of expansion. The material realism of the scientific community was rooted on the concept of an eternal self existent universe. The evidence that the universe will not recycle, that there will be no big crush, the present universe will experience a heat death due to the increasing rate of expansion means that the present universe is not eternal or self existent. The Scientific Community is still trying to deal with concept that the universe may be an open system and there is something besides the energy and matter in the present universe.
