Explanation:

Chromosome numbering is done according to their size after aligning them descending size. Karyotyping helps us number the chromosomes based on their size.

During Karyotyping we pair the same size chromosomes together and then align them in increasing order. Sex chromosomes are unusual as they do not form homologous pair they are assigned, separate group.

Below is the image of Human Karyotype where the biggest chromosome pair is Number 1, with Number 2 which is little smaller than chromosome 1 but more significant than chromosome 3.
