Shanghai Communique was also called the Joint Communique of the United States of America (I believe). This was a document issued at around 1972 when President Nixon visited China. It states that it is in the interest of all nations for the U.S. and China to work towards normalizing their relations (think of it as breaking the awkwardness out of an awkward situation). However, it took seven years for this to happen.
