To make stable ionic compounds.

Atoms undergo ionisation to make charged atoms. These charged atoms can be positive or negative. They key thing is that the opposite charged ions will attract each other. This makes a stable compound as it essentially giving the overall compound an outer shell. The ionic compound will also in the end have no charge as when the opposite charged ions attract, the two charges cancel out to neutral.
