The East African countries (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, etc) were bordering the Red Sea, where the Arabs crossed to get to the Western side of Africa. In order to do that, they crossed East Africa, where they'd go through Axum and would trade from there.
