Van der Waals attractions are the weakest of all forces but they can occur between any two molecules.

There are two types:

London Dispersion forces (this term is sometimes synonymous with Van der Waals force)- This is when the molecules have no other source of interaction (ionic, covalent, H bonding etc) and have no constant dipole moment. This occurs by change that the electrons around the atom are randomly collected on one side on the molecule momentarily. Because of the electronic interaction between molecules, this "induces" a dipole moment on a nearby molecule (called an induced dipole moment) and they temporarily have an interaction that keeps them together.

Dipole-Dipole (these are sometimes in a separate category depending on your teacher) these are more stable than an induced dipole because the dipole moment of the molecule is permanent based off of the polarity of the molecule's ends. This would be a neutral molecule over all but its is neutral because it has a positive end and a negative end that balance each other out) when two molecules like this come close with each other, they attract each other and have a weak interaction.
