The simplest way to solve this is to set up an equation that includes all parts of the problem.

The best equation would look like this:

#15.5 - 3.875(3) = x#

#15.5# being the original length of the board

#3.875(3)# being the length cut off times the number of times being cut off

And #x# being the final length

All we do from here is to solve.

#15.5 - 11.625 = x#

#3.375 = x#

Simplify and get:

#x = 3 3/8 ft.#
