Functional Groups are usually the basis of an organic compound's reactivity towards other compounds or their function. From the root word "function" it is largely responsible for the chemical behavior of the parent molecule.

Explanation:

Functional Groups are usually the basis of an organic compound's reactivity towards other compounds or their function. From the root word "function" they are group of atoms that is characterized by its special arrangement into certain molecules that is largely responsible for the chemical behavior of the parent molecule.

Example:
OH in ethanol. The OH group of ethanol would signify that it is a alcohol. The OH part of the molecule determines what type of reaction would this compound undergo under certain circumstances.

Another example is the common NH2 of Ethylamine which would act as a base under normal circumstances.

Others are, C=O (C double bond O) of ketones and aldehydes which are called carbonyl group.
