Renaissance: The cultural rebirth that occurred in Europe from roughly the fourteenth through the middle of the seventeenth centuries marking the transition from the medieval to the modern world.

Explanation:

The Renaissance was a time of great revival in things like art, literature, and learning in Europe.

Some notable figures of this time period include:

Leonardo Da Vinci (painter, scientist, inventor, and polymath)
Michelangelo (sculptor, painter and architect)
Nicholas Copernicus (mathematician and astronomer)
Galileo (scientist)
Johannes Kepler (scientist)
William Shakespeare (playwright)
Christopher Marlowe (playwright)

I'm sure you recognize at least a few of these names, and doing some further research on them would help you better understand who was contributing to the major changes during the renaissance.

Ar techniques like perspective and realism were prevalent during this time period, rejecting romantization of subjects and instead trying to depict things as they really were.
This lead to the development of more illusionistic painting techniques used to maximizing 'depth' in a picture, including: linear perspective, foreshortening and, quadratura (mural paintings that are on ceilings or walls).

And lets not forget the COUNTLESS inventions that emerged during this time period.
These include:
Printing press
Telescope
Microscope
Barometer
Anemometer
Flush toilet
Thermometer
Eyeglasses

Notice how many of these inventions were tools that would particularly helpful in the field of science, as inventing better tools was essential for having greater accuracy and extending their research beyond that of limited human observation. We can only do so much with our own senses, so certain items, like the telescope, were made to assist us. This also contributed to the scientific advancements that were made during this time.

When thinking about the "consequences" the renaissance had just think about how certain inventions aided certain scientific discoveries, and how those discoveries affected society as a whole. Each new advancement paved the way for further advancement. The more they discovered the more they realized how much there is to discover, it was one big domino affect that played a huge rule in shaping how modern society is today.

The Renaissance gave freedom for people to think for themselves and challenge the thinking dictated by authority

Explanation:

The Renaissance was sparked by the influx of scholars from the Eastern Roman Empire after the Fourth Crusade sacked Constaniople and the fall of Constantiople to the Muslim Ottoman Turks.

The Geeks scholars from the East brought copies of the Greek Bible and the skills to read the Bible in the original Greek. This challenged the authority of the Wester Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church depended on the Vulgate translation of the Bible and mainly only the church authorities could read the Latin.
Many teachings of the Catholic church were based on the Latin and were not supported by the Greek version. This gave people freedom to challenge the authority of the Catholic church. One result was the Protestant Reformation.

The Greeks brought other forms of art to the West. Before the Renaissance all art was focused on religious themes. The art of the Renaissance focused also on humanistic themes. Man instead of God became the center of thought expressed in art. This new way of thinking about man changed the society of Europe. The absolute authority of kings and nobles was challenged creating an atmosphere that would eventually result in a more democratic society.

The freedom of thought created by the Protestant Reformation
and Renaissance art helped to spark the Scientific Revolution. Instead of depending on the authority of past writings Scientists started to do experiments to see if the ideas taught by the past authorities were really true. The Scientific Revolution changed technology and the way people in Europe lived.

The Renaissance changed the way people were free to think. Instead of depending on authorities people were free to think for themselves. Some of the consequences were the Protestant Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, Art that represented Humanistic ideals. the erosion of the political power of kings and nobles, and the loss of the absolute authority of the Roman Catholic Church in Europe.
