An aphorism is a brief sentence or phrase that expresses an opinion or makes a statement of wisdom.

With that being said, an aphorism is just a shortened way of saying something that could be explained in greater detail. For example, someone may choose to say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" instead of saying, "I don't think we should fix that because I don't see how it is necessary."
