Iodine helps the body secrete the thyroid hormone from the thyroid glands in the neck.
Thyroid controls many metabolic activities of the body. It is also needed for proper bone growth and brain development during pregnancy and infancy.
Breastfeeding and pregnant women need lots of iodine. This is because their infants receive their needed iodine from the mother, such as through breastmilk.
However, you still shouldn't take lots of iodine. this could lead to thyroid cancer.
Interestingly, both a deficiency of and lots of iodine lead to the same disease, goitre, where the thyroid gland swells up.
