We have to find the potential difference between X and Y

Given to us is the circuit....
In parallel connection, potential to both branches is the same.

Using ohm's law...

potential at X
#V=IR#
some potential would have been dropped because of first # 5 Omega# resistor,,, if we calculate that drop and subtract it from #2# we get potential at X

Now, since all resistors are of #5Omega#, we get nice symmetry..

Each resistor would decrease potential by #2/3# (because there are three #5Omega# resistors connected in series in each branch..

So potential at X would be
#2-2/3=4/3#

and at Y
#2-2*2/3=2/3#

#V_(X-Y)=4/3-2/3=2/3V#
