When talking about voltaic cells or electrolytic cells it is useful to remember that oxidation occurs at the anode per definition. In a voltaic cell, the anode is the negative electrode while in electrolysis the anode is the positive electrode- but oxidation occurs at the anode in both cases as the anode is defined as where oxidation occurs.

For the cathode in a voltaic cell, this is where reduction occurs and the cathode is the positive electrode . For the cathode in an electrolytic cell the cathode is the negative electrode and reduction occurs there.
