Explanation:

#A=1/2(x+y)#

Is the same as:
#A=(1x+1y)/2#, or more simply:

#A=(x+y)/2#

As all we are doing is multiplying the brackets by the numerator, and dividing by the denominator.

First we need to get rid of the denominator, so we multiply both sides by 2, giving us:

#2A=(x+y)#

From here, we can subtract y from both sides to get x by itself:

#2A-y=(x+y)-y#

And voila!

#x = 2A -y#
